Uhh Yeah Dude, I’m In NYC

For the past 3 months the soundtrack to my commute has been the informative and comical ramblings of Seth Romatelli and Jonathan Larroquette in a podcast by the name of Uhh Yeah Dude. Described as ”A weekly roundup of America through the eyes of two American Americans”, UYD features a hosting duo of two quick-witted thirty somethings who’s personalities, upbringing, and life experience are so different that a beautiful contrast has formed. This contrast not only makes it easier for the audience to relate to the show as a whole but it makes the comedic angles and tone so drastically variable that you never know what to expect. The show has been around since early 2006 and I’ve spent a good deal of time catching up on old episodes (to date there are 190). In that time they have hosted two live shows and I was lucky enough to catch the latest one in Brooklyn, NY.

Because I wasn’t sure where I was going to stay, nor was I staying long, I packed light and smart; several layers including a thermal, an iPod which I kept out of sight most of the time and my new Blackberry which is a great travel companion… that was it. The BoltBus escorted me down for $33 round-trip and the show was free leaving me more budget to blow on fine dining and liquor. Once in the city I checked out some sights and learned a great appreciation for the NYC subway system (Boston, take note). After that I headed to Williamsburg, which I later found out was the hipster capital of the hipster capital. I had a lovely dinner at El Amacen where I sat at the bar and insisted my fellow bar mates sample my dish before they ordered it, after the shock wore off they tried a bite and get friendly as they appreciated the open invitation from a stranger. I even got some karma back in the form of a bottomless wine glass as the waitress also loved my open-plate policy.
The show was at a venue called Public Assembly, a well-know spot by everyone I talked to (friends who’ve lived there, the kid next to me on the bus, the guy who sold me a sausage outside central park, the bartender at the Irish pub, and a random girl on the subway). We waited about an hour and a half while the bar got packed, and I mean packed! There was a guest list, but they didn’t seem to be using it. I was lucky enough to meet Seth before the show and tell him how much I enjoyed his work and he was sincerely appreciative. The two came out on stage greeted by a roaring applause of well over 100 UYD hungry east coasters and were genuinely shocked. They put on a kick ass show even though you could tell they were still in shock from the hoard of screaming fans, normally non-existent when they tape the show in Seth’s living room.

The show was hilarious, I got to meet both Seth and Jonathan. After mission accomplished I took the subway up to my buddy Bill’s pad and watched Star Trek with James, a member of the silver-medal USA Olympic fencing team from the 2008 Beijing games, so cool! And I didn’t have to sleep outside.
Here’s some pictures from the trip:
