Maher Vs. Coulter, All Out Bloodshed

Last night some of the Visible Measures crowd and I checked out the Ann Coulter and Bill Maher spectacle as part of a speaker series at The Wang Theater. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in but I certainly knew what I wanted. As someone who isn’t that into political commentary I was hoping to at the very least be wildly entertained by this bipartisan and bipolar pair, and wildly entertained I was.

Each speaker did about 15 minutes as an intro and quickly moved on to a moderated Q & A section. Of course when I say moderated I mean there was a third person on stage who, in this case, wasn’t moderating very well. They would be given a topic to run with and as you can imagine they took full advantage. The moderator wasn’t able to get the discussion to “stay the course” and each speaker would go off on a rant.

As you can imagine, Maher being a comedian and Coulter being a walking controversy, this turned into an awkward cocktail party on steroids and the crowd got riled up like a punk rock concert out of PBR.  One of my favorite moments is when Bill Maher used some colorful language to publicly curse out a loud-mouth heckler in the crowd. “Don’t be an asshole, shut the f*ck up, Joe the Plumber!” Despite being in Blue-as-hell Boston there seemed to be a decent balance of political opinion in the crowd and I fully enjoyed the healthy dose of entertaining political chatter, which in my experience is certainly a rarity.

*funny sidenote, @JamesIII and I totally got yelled at by the ushers for Tweeting during the show

I’m almost starting to feel bad for the moderator – EVERYONE is ripping him. Also, you guys gotta get better about tweeting surreptitiously. Get your head in the game! Heh.

Ha! True story, if that usher wasn’t 90 years old we would have been totally busted.
