BOSup 2008 presents, Real Live Twitter!

*Disclaimer: If you do not use twitter or know what it is this post will have no relevance to you and will probably make you think I’m a much bigger dork than you already do.

This past Saturday night I threw on my best shirt and headed to one of my favorite bars, Jillian’s on Lansdowne St. in Boston. Although this is a fairly regular routine for me, this Saturday night was a bit different. Instead of meeting up with some friends from work or perhaps a special someone I arrived to find a group of twitter tweeters chatting it up live and in the flesh! The event was BOSup2008, a Boston twitter meet up organized by Lisa Dilg (@pprlisa) and sponsored by my favorite local Twitter advocates, @HubSpot. After taping on my @fullyadam name tag I met some great people and enjoyed some excellent conversation. The common theme of twitter and social media gave us much to talk about while the beer and increasingly louder music gave us something to dance about. (shout out to @kevinmic, @repcor, @cmajor, @ellieeille and others for setting the dancefloor ablaze.) I also saw quite the showcase of mobile Internet devices which allowed most to tweet while at the event, so cool.

The funniest part was when a handful of us were chatting about how hard it is to describe Twitter to a non-user when someone (a non-user) came up and asked, “Hey, what’s with all the nametags?” To which we responded with collective “ummm” until @chrisbowen and @combustingboy picked up the slack, explained the online networking tool, and she walked away with an @nametag of her own.

Events like this are great because you can feel a little bit more personal and friendly when discussing the topics we all find fascinating. In a matter of hours I had met several people hailing from multiple tech/marketing genres who gave me the interest boost I needed after an extended vacation off-line.

Thanks to all who were involved in planning and execution, especially @HubSpot for the food.

Here are some phot highlights thanks to @ellieeille

Adam, had a blast, glad I had the chance to meet you. I’m hoping there are more tweetups in the Boston area with good music. My favorite thing about these events is people come together through Twitter, but it’s far from a dork meetup. They come from all types of backgrounds and professions. Such a great way to meet more people in the area!

Kevin, It was also nice to meet you and thanks for the comment, you raise a good point. My takeaway was the event was so great because we were brought together by a general social media platform instead of a more vertical platform like MITX, for example. This gave the opportunity for diverse conversation with people that had at least one thing in common with eachother.
