Card Games Outside the Local Asylum

A couple weeks ago a few friends and I went to the Improv Asylum comedy show in the North End. Long story short, it was hilarious and I highly recommend it. Short story long; when I went to pick up my tickets at the will call booth around 9, for the 10 o’clock show, I was confronted by an exuberant fellow outside the door complete with camera man and microphone. A dude in a black suit and a pink tie asked me and my good buddy Patrick a few strange questions about late night banking…

“Where do you get money?” He asked.

“The Bank” I replied.

He then asked where I would get money at night. To which I replied, “A really convenient bank?”

That was not the answer he was looking for. Right about now you are probably thinking he wanted me to say, “The ATM, the ATM. I get money from the ATM!” Which I was about to say when, “What the hell happened to your glasses?” The guy asked. He pointed to my glasses which I had scratched all to hell a few weeks earlier when I face planted on an old New England sidewalk. After shoving the camera in my face and getting a good look at my glasses he let me on my merry way.

Later that night my friends and I were enjoying some late night laughs at the improv show when they reached the audience participation portion. One of the cast members had some audience members pick out card from a deck featured in the game, Taboo. For those who don’t know, Taboo is a card game where you try to get another player to guess the word on your card using clues you give. However, the clues you give are restricted by other words on the card. For instance, your word is “window” you can give verbal clue but can not use the words pane, shade or glass. Kapeesh? Well after some audience members picked a card the cast member handed the card off to another cast member, an exuberant fellow in a black suit and a pink tie.

The man in the pink tie proceeded to walk out onto the street, camera man in toe, and asked some random passer-by’s a few questions in an attempt to get them to say his Taboo phrase from the audience-chose card. While he did this the camera man filmed the whole thing and we watched on live feed inside the theater. It was pretty funny to watch some bumbling idiot answer questions into a microphone not knowing he was part of a sketch comedy game of Taboo…. funny that is until I realized that I was the bumbling idiot from the 8 o’clock show.

On my way out of the show I said to one of the cast member, “Great show!” To which she replied, “Thanks, fix your glasses.”
